The Triplets of Bellville

I know it has been a while since The Triplets of Bellville was released, and that it won 18 different awards, and received 22 nominations including 2 for Oscars. But it was one of those “I really want to see that, but it’ll wait till I have the opportunity” type films.
Well, I’ve finally had the opportunity and now I can see what all the Hoo-Ha was about.
This is a bizarrely comic and intriguingly dark animation at times, but entirely entertaining. The very sparse dialogue works in its favour as it is incredibly visually engaging. I saw it without subtitles and I don’t think anything was lost. Almost all the characters have been exaggerated to the point that speaking wouldn’t have added anything anyhow. Like the mobsters that are nothing but bulk and are all literally indistinguishable from each other, or the cyclists that know nothing other than cycling and occasionally make horse noises like the work-beasts they appear to be.
Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the ridiculous exaggeration in engineering seen in the very tall buildings as well as the ship seen here:

So, if you’re looking for a musical adventure that is at times slightly disturbing but delightfully nostalgic from start to finish, this one is for you.
And I have to say, this movie contains one of the best car chase scenes I have ever seen. :)
