Saint Saviour

My latest musical obsession is Saint Saviour and as she is yet to release a full length album, I thought I would take you on the journey that I went on in discovering her, and now wanting to listen to her all the time.

So, as I do every few months, just to see what's out there, I was searching the net for any new Kate Bush cover versions. (I do this because there is such a long time between Kate albums, that in the mean time I like to see what other people are doing with her music.) And I stumbled upon one I'd never heard before: A Brilliant Acapella version of Army Dreamers by an artist called Saint Saviour.

Army Dreamers (Kate Bush Acapella Cover) by Saint Saviour

Her voice really captured me. And so did the cover version. I have to say, I've heard a lot of Kate Bush covers and many of them are just not worth listening to with the original around. But occasionally someone will do something really interesting with one of her songs. (I've yet to do a shameless self-promotion blog on my own group's cover, watch this blog! ) Saint Saviour's really is something special. I was so taken by it I knew I had to have it. But no matter how much searching I did, I could not find a copy of it for download anywhere, officially or otherwise. So I went to her website and found that just by signing up to her newsletter I could get a free mp3! (You can do this also, and I recommend it! Look on the right hand side HERE)

This time, the song song was an acoustic version of one of her other songs, Hurricanes.

To be honest, at this point I stopped chasing mp3s. But it was only a matter of days until I couldn't get through the day without listening to this song again. And again. And again.

The quality of her voice is divine, ethereal and raw, all at the same time. It's emotion and mystery. It surrounds and penetrates you. It peals you back to your core, to your structural frame, leaving you feeling exposed and strong simultaneously.

A few weeks later, it dawned on me that I had been listening to the one track over and over and surely there must be more available out there. I started fluffing around on youtube, before I got frustrated and went straight to her website store and bought every mp3 that was there as well as ordering a physical copy of the new 'Suukei' EP that was soon to be released. I was in heaven.

The only problem now was, I still had to wait 6 weeks for the CD to turn up (it wasn't released then) and it was the only way I would be able to own Army Dreamers. But, I had plenty to listen to (on repeat) until then.

Some highlights that you might enjoy are Woman Scorned:

And Fallen Trees is amazing!

And I'm very partial to This Ain't No Hymn aslo...

And finally, the lead track from the Suukei EP, Red Sun, is very special. It arrived just this week in the post! I was so excited! And this is quite a cool clip made by Cat Pykett and Nicola Bates of London School of Fashion.

So, that was my Saint Saviour journey. Clearly there's more music out there, but that's some of my favourites. I'm very excited at the prospect of a full length album. I'm just left to lament that as I'm in Australia and not London, I won't be able to see her live for some time (either till I happen to find the money to go over there when she happens to be doing a show, or if she gets big enough to come over here... she certainly deserves to get big enough).

I think I've gone on long enough. I hope you've enjoyed the music too. Be sure to look out for my review of her album when I get my greedy mitts on it!
