Any teen who has felt any expectation from the adults around them will understand this book.
Therefore, any teen will understand this book.
It is confronting. It does not shy away from what it is trying to say.
It is powerful.
Libby Gleeson and Armin Greder are an amazing pair. To my knowledge, they have done three books together, each one a masterpiece with a very different tone. This one is the most blatant and in your face. As it should be.
But, it almost seems like this should be read by all the adults in “Thomas’” life. Because the problem they’re discussing is not with Thomas.
This is another fine example of why the picture book genre is no-longer simply for early childhood, and anyone who still thinks that needs to take another look at the world. Not only is this picture book for Teens (in fact, I’d be cautious showing it to pre-teens), but it is saying something about the behaviour of adults that may well need addressing.
