There’s something just so curvy and fun about Nick Bland’s
illustrations that make his books so enjoyable!
And any book with a message that the imagination is a good
thing is alright in my opinion.
Combine the two, and you’ve got a great book about Henry, a
very serious boy, who one day had a thought that didn’t make any sense at all.
This thought gets carried away with itself and before you know it, Henry’s
sailing the seven seas.
Bland’s contrasting the “real world” in black and white
against the bright and bold symptoms of imgainitis is fantastic. And as soon as
Henry realises that these nonsense thoughts are perfectly acceptable, just
until he grows up, he is depicted in colour!
So while he thinks it’s fine to play imaginary games until
he grows up, I think one of the reasons I love this book so much is because I
never learned that you had to disregard these thoughts as an adult.
