The Princess and The Pea by James Finn Garner

What is it?
The Princess and the Pea

Who wrote it?
James Finn Garner

Where can it be found?
in: Once Upon a More Enlightened Time: More politically Correct Bedtime Stories

Adaptation?
Yes! Of the ‘politically correct’ variety.

My thoughts in exactly 10 words:
‘PC’ to the extreme unearths the flaws in this story.

Extended thoughts:
Having fun last week pondering the crux of the story The Princess and the Pea, this week I thought I’d read the PC version. (I don’t know why I haven’t read this earlier? It was published in 1995 and has been on my shelf for years!). It was so funny! Not only did it point out the unspoken flaws in the original story that are taken for granted or unknown by the general reader (The classist nature of the hunt for a wife, the haemophiliac consequences of interbreeding, the Oedipal motivations of the queen) it does so in such a satiric and funny way! I’m now going to make time this weekend to read the rest of these stories!

Favourite Quote:
Do I have to pick just one??

“Perhaps I should widen my scope a bit,” he mused.
“What? And throw out your standards?”
“No, Mummy, perhaps I’ve fallen into a trap of the orthodox heterosexualist majority. Maybe there is a fine young prince out there for me. It’s at least worth a try.”

Moral of the story in my own words:
One mustn’t judge prospective partners on such strict criteria. You may fall in love with the unexpected.
