Hansel and Gretel by James Finn Garner

What is it?
Hansel and Gretel

Who wrote it?
James Finn Garner

Where can it be found?
in: Once Upon a More Enlightened Time: More politically Correct Bedtime Stories

Adaptation?
Another of the ‘PC’ kind.

My thoughts in exactly 10 words:
Not a ‘witch’ but ‘Wiccan’ and defender of Mother Earth.

Extended thoughts:
This is a very different take on this story that ended up focusing on the issue of the father’s “wood butchering” more than anything else. Honestly, I didn’t laugh as much as I did in some of the others, but there were some giggles. It was interesting to see the father as the bad guy all the way through and then how his “biological but not spiritual” pre-adults are able to overcome their oppressors.

Favourite Quote:
“Then, around a sharp bend in their path, they came upon a wondrous cottage made of carob brownies, sugarless gingerbread, and carrot cake. Even without a reassuring FDA label, the cottage looked so good that the children dived at it and began to devour it.”

Moral of the story in my own words:

Don’t leave your children in the forest, then become rich and powerful and want to pulp that same forest.
