Tanglewood by Margaret Wild and Vivienne Goodman

"On a tiny island, in the middle of nowhere, there was a tree. There was only one tree on the island, and it was called Tanglewood."

This stunning picture book is a beautiful tale of loneliness and longing for companionship. Tanglewood calls to the passing animals, asking them to stop and stay a while, but she is only visited by the wind.

One day a bird shelters from a storm in the branches of Tanglewood, but too soon she must return to her family. The tree knows nothing of family and is saddened to hear that it is everything. Then Seagull must leave and Tanglewood is alone once more.

I don't want to ruin the shivers you'll get when you read the ending for yourself, so I'll leave it there as far as the story is concerned. Just know that once again, Margaret Wild has written something quietly amazing. And Vivienne Goodman's illustrations are perfectly matched. Apparently it took her seven years to illustrate. Seven years to get it just right. They're perfect.

Do yourself a favour, find this picture book and read it.
