Wait! No Paint! by Bruce Whatley

What is it?
 Wait! No Paint!

Who wrote it?
 Bruce Whatley

Adaptation?
This is 'The Three Little Pigs' when the role of the illustrator is literally brought into the story.

My thoughts in exactly 10 words:
Perfect meta-fictive irreverence. There are many Laugh out Loud moments.

Extended thoughts:
Things unfold in the typical way for our three pigs, they set off to build their houses of their different materials. It's almost as if we know exactly what will happen when:

The first little pig had just finished building his house when he heard a splash.
"Opps!" said a Voice from nowhere in particular. "I spilt my juice."

The Illustrator is getting a little too involved. It all descends into near anarchy when he runs out of red paint, no-longer able to make our heroes pink. He tries lots of different combinations and plot twists due to the lack of paint, all to the dissatisfaction of the pigs. I'd like to explain them all, but I'd be ruining the book for you when you read it! I've already said too much!

Words and illustrations play delightfully together as they poke fun at the way stories are created and narrative and fairytale conventions are contorted. Very funny indeed!

Favourite Quote:

They told him about the spilt juice, the wolf with the hurt nose, and the mysterious Voice.
The third little pig jumped up and bolted the door.
"I know who the Voice is," he said, turning white as a ghost. "It's the ILLUSTRATOR."

Moral of the story in my own words:
Being well prepared will help in almost any eventuality.
