The True Story of Mary By Jane Godwin and Drahos Zak

The True Story Of Mary Who Wanted To Stand On Her Head.

This has been in my personal library since I discovered it during my days working in a bookshop, what seems like years and years ago. The moment I found it I knew it was special. It remains one of those special gems that come to mind whenever I think of my favourite quirky little books.

I just wanted to write a short post, bringing it to people’s attention and letting them know that it’s well worth tracking down.

Jane Godwin’s rhyme is perfectly matched to Drahos Zak’s dark and peculiar illustrations that together really embody what this story is all about: being true to one’s self.

The back cover sums it up pretty well: “Mary is an upside-down girl and there is just no stopping her. The delightfully spiky story of a wayward girl who is determined to live her own life.”

I love it!
