The True Story Of Mary Who Wanted To Stand On Her Head.
This has been in my personal library since I discovered it
during my days working in a bookshop, what seems like years and years ago. The
moment I found it I knew it was special. It remains one of those special gems
that come to mind whenever I think of my favourite quirky little books.
I just wanted to write a short post, bringing it to people’s
attention and letting them know that it’s well worth tracking down.
Jane Godwin’s rhyme is perfectly matched to Drahos Zak’s
dark and peculiar illustrations that together really embody what this story is
all about: being true to one’s self.
The back cover sums it up pretty well: “Mary is an
upside-down girl and there is just no stopping her. The delightfully spiky
story of a wayward girl who is determined to live her own life.”
I love it!
Find it on Goodreads

Hi, can i ask you something? My friend is looking for children books with "scary" animal illustrations, especially fairy tales. She's doing a small research research on that topic. What do I mean by "scary"? For example, Wolf (or fox) eating pigs (or seven kids or Red Riding Hood or birds in Chicken Little...) or being pictured with a fat stomach. Have you seen any book of this sort? Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Nelly,
ReplyDeleteThere are a few that come to mind, some are very old so I'm not sure how you'll go finding them. 'The Fox: Went Out On A Chilly Night' An old song illustrated by Peter Spier is one from my childhood that has a fox stealing two geese and then taking them home, plucking them and feeding his family. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/667288.The_Fox_Went_Out_on_a_Chilly_Night
Dangerous Journey (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29822.Dangerous_Journey) has lots of scary illustrations, ogres, giants, dogs, lions, etc.
Quite a few traditional illustrations of fairy tales can be scary/dark. My favourite place for them is http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/illustrations/index.html. I love that website!
Other than that, I'm having trouble thing of things that fit the description you are after.
I hope that helps!
Michael
It sure does help, thanks again!
