Fairly straight forward telling (or should I say showing) of
the Aesop fable.
My thoughts in
exactly 10 words:
Pinkney’s version has everything it needs: words were not
included.
Extended thoughts:
This book won the Caldecott Medal in 2010. All you need do
is pick it up to see why. Absolutely stunning watercolours that achieved the
much sought after, rarely achieved, perfect balance between sketchy/loose and
exquisite detail. And with such beautiful pictures, there is more than enough
detail in them for the story to come through. This is what I love about
wordless picture books: whether it’s the case of not, by letting a child tell
you the story, they feel like they are creating the story; it gives them power
over the book that can be diminished by prescriptive words. As explained by
Jerry Pinkney in the video below, sometimes the pictures can contain it all.
